Tipperary Hills Re-Opened

Michael Brennan stood on the first tee and welcomed over one hundred people who had turned out to support this event.
Archdeacon McGrath blessed the fields behind him and all those who had worked so hard to recreate the beautiful pitch & putt grounds. The Mayor of Tipperary Cllr.Mary Swords, officers of the County Pitch & Putt Board and members of the County Team were all present to give their full support.

Myles McMorrow, County Board Chairman and PPUI Vice President, gave a welcoming speech and congratulated everyone on their hard work and paid special mention to the Tipperary Hills Club who have fought so valiantly to get the Club back up and running.

Michael Brennan addressed all who were present and outlined the history of the club. The club was originally formed when Noel McInerney, in April 1970, put forward the idea that The Hills should be developed as a town park. The idea of a pitch & putt course was proposed in November that year and the first committee was formed. The first committee comprised of Archdeacon Ryan as President, Michael Dermady as Chairperson, Noreen Cullen as Secretary and Treasurer Michael Ryan.

The original course went along the old road and came back to the 18th which is now the first green but due to insurance problems the course was moved to its now present layout. Over the years many County Provincial and Nationals Competitions were held on the Hills and for some years it was one of the best supported in the County. The Mazda Scratch Cup attracted the top players from all over the country and was an event not to be missed.

Some excellent players were produced by Tipperary’s Pitch & Putt Club; Christeen Glasheen & Richard O’Halloran were the first to bring a national title to the club in 1981, when they won the National Foursomes at Waterford Glass. Seamie O’Halloran followed in 1986 and Edward Lonergan in 1987 when they won the National Juvenile Strokeplay. In 1988 Breda Lonergan won the Ladies Title and in 1995, Willie Collins and Anthony Cuchane, who were leading members of the club, won the All Ireland.

Many members have represented the club on county teams over the years.

In 2005, after 35 years, due to numerous reasons the club closed down. This was a big loss to the people of Tipperary at that time but fortunately, in November 2008, a public meeting was called and a new committee was formed. Driven by Sean Keane who had been a founding member, work commenced in February 2009. Sods were ordered for 18 greens and with help from neighbouring club in Cashel, Brian Webster, Jimmy O’Neil and Shane Hoare the greens were laid. The Tipperary Credit Union donated j25,000 to the project and Cavanagh Brothers, Rite Price Kitchens all donated equipment to furnish the clubhouse. All Tee Boxes were sponsored and FAS workers were used to help with the hard work.

Michael Brennan, on behalf of the committee, offered a huge thank you to all those who had worked hard and had sponsored the club .

“I would also like to call on a man who has given his heart and soul to the club since 1970.

It was his vision and drive that got us reformed as a club and in recognition of his hard work and dedication for the last 39 years, it was unanimously decided to reward him with the highest honour of becoming our new Club President." Michael called forward Sean Keane as the new Club President and asked him to cut the ribbon with Mayor Mary Swords and Myles McMarrow. Sean gave an emotional speech and was honoured to receive the great thanks and appreciation from the club.

With the club officially opened, members of the county team tee'd off after the offical opening and then everyone was invited back to the club house for refreshments.

Earlier in the day large crowds attended a Tipp Hills Appreciation Day which was a marvellous success.

People of the town celebrated the re-opening of The Hills and
the official re-launch of the Tipperary Hills Pitch & Putt was part of the day long ceremonies.

Tipperary Teams Take Third

Cloghogue was the venue of the Ladies and Gents Inter County Championships for 2009 and what a feast of Pitch & Putt our teams displayed. The ladies were rank outsiders to get a medal but the team was very confident they could get in the medals for the first time since 1990. They got a great draw when playing with Cork and every player tried their livings best to bring home the spoils. Led my leading light Michelle McCarthy who returned -1, Tipp were nicely poised to raise a gallop. Margaret Webster, Bridget Shelley and Martha O'Brien were next to come in and all played incredibly well considering they were only permitted to play one practice round due to the inclement weather conditions. Last but by no means least Brid Ryan led the girls to claim the Bronze medal. Brid has been at the forefront of the ladies game for well over a decade now and it was fitting that she would have the final say to get Tipp the Bronze medal. This Tipperary team if they stick together and perhaps get one or two more inclusions could well challenge for this Championship over the next few years.

The Men took to the Tee at 9am on a rain soaked Cloghogue the following morning. The wind was swirling and the rain was heavy but this didn't dampen the spirits of the lads. Noel Joyce led the team from outset, Noel Stapleton, James Cleary, Sean Minogue and Paul O'Brien followed. Cleary who has had an indifferent season really got going in horrendous conditions to post a fantastic -5 for his opening 18 holes while the remaining 4 players playing consistently well. However come with the man come with the hour, the evergreen Minogue who made his debut for Tipperary back in 1979 produced his best pitch and putt for Tipperary since 1995 when he captained the team to victory. Sean's 2nd round of 47 left him on -10 overall and he brought Tipperary to the Bronze medal for the 3rd successive year. It has to be said though that the Tipp lads might look back on this and wonder did they leave it behind them. This team are slowly getting to the level needed to challenge for this title in the next few years they have a serious change to challenging once again for the Anchor Cup

McCarthy Wins Ladies Intermediate National Strokeplay

McCarthy Wins lands Ladies Intermediate Title.

The weather continued to deteriorate for the final 18 holes in the Ladies National Intermediate Championship at Glenville, however the leader going out Michelle McCarthy, despite her relative youth, showed a steely determination in adding a final 18 score of 53 to emerge champion with an overall score of -1. Michelle now joins the elite of players who have managed to win the Munster & All Ireland Ladies Strokeplay in the same year. Michelle is one of the leading lights within the ladies game and will be a force to be reckoned with in next years Senior Championships. Talent likd Michelle's is badly needed to energise the ladies game as a whole and it will be ineresting to see how she tackles the top players in the years ahead. She was followed in second place by Anne-Marie McCabe (Ferbane) with a score of +10 while Martha O’Brien (Lakeside) came in third with a score of +11. Michelle who has a great future ahead of her in the game will now be pushing towards the Senior Ranks, where she is more than capable of holding her own. The ladies game in Tipperary is going through a major resurgence in recent months and only time will tell whether or not our ladies can be chasing National Senior Honours.
Congratulations once again to Michelle on her fine triumph and also to Martha who finished a gallant third place.

Cahill Claims National Honours

Brian Cahill is the new leading light at Lakeside at the present time after his fantastic All Ireland Junior Strokeplay Championship played at Tralee last Saturday. Cahill, although playing the game for a number of years now, really only concentrated on participating in tournaments this year and what a year the Drom man is having. Having already won the Munster Junior Strokeplay at Bruff in late May, he justifiably went into last Saturday’s competition with the favourites tag, the question was could he live up to the expectation? He seemed nervous at the beginning and this was to be expected, he made a few errors in the middle of the round and found himself +3 after 16 holes. The next 20 holes Brian played some outstanding pitch and putt. He was –5 in total playing his 36th hole but more importantly he was –8 for the 19 holes previous to that and this would be incredible standard for a Junior player in a competition of this magnitude. An unfortunate bogey on the last hole left Brian on –4 after 36 holes and he was well and truly in the driving seat. He would have a 3 shot lead going into the Final round and this would be to prove very beneficial. Brian started the Final 18 very steadily and was level par after 6 holes, he managed to birdie the tough 7th hole and his opponent took a bogey and Brian was ahead by 5 shots now at this stage. His opponent birdied the 8th hole but he bogeyed the 9th and Brian was playing very steadily, making no mistakes which was vital at this stage of the competition. By the time Brian reached the treacherous 12th hole he was nearly home and hosed but this hole was killing people all day and although Brian bogeyed it, the relief could be seen from his face that this was hole was now over and he could smell the taste of victory only 6 holes to go. Once again he birdied the 13th hole, the pitch he played was majestic and left himself a tap in much to his delight. He pared the next 4 holes and playing down the last hole he had a 5 shot lead and only he could lose it at this stage. He pitched behind the green which was the sensible tee shot as the green was surrounded by a big bunker, he failed to get up and down but he tapped in for a bogey and with it claimed the All Ireland Junior Strokeplay Title. His band of supporters went wild with celebrations and Brian proved to be an extremely popular winner. Although Brian is a quite, unassuming young man, his desire to win and will to succeed has ensured that he has a very bright future in the game.

Paddy Power RIP

The world of Pitch and Putt will be the poorer for the passing of proud Patron of the PPUI, Paddy Power (RIP). Hillview has produced a number of fine administrators, none more so than Paddy Power, who rendered over three decades of service as Tipperary delegate to Munster Council and as Munster envoy to Central Council.

As a perennial President of Hillview, Paddy was the driving force behind many a successful championship hosting by the revered Clonmel club. Hillview were always truly magnificent hosts. The social and catering elements of hosting were always superbly delivered. Informative and attractive souvenir programmes augmented the events on the course. The flawless greens routinely received universal acclaim from players, officials and supporters. Hillview, with Paddy Power's gentle hand on the tiller, always projected the image that the Union is craving. Future visitors to Hillview will miss Paddy's warm smile of welcome.

For many years Clonmel's only traffic warden, Paddy was a very well known figure around the town. He used his contacts widely to generate sponsorship for Hillview and Tipperary and lost no opportunity to promote and publicise Pitch and Putt in the community.

A loyal attendee at PPUI Annual Convention, Paddy was a staunch defender of the PPUI Constitution and rule book. Delegates always looked forward to a Paddy Power intervention on the Convention floor. There were glowing citations for sitting Officers and aspiring candidates. There were many witty, unconventional contributions, delivered with a roguish glint in the eye. Opportunities for banter were never passed up, particularly if there was an opening to champion his beloved Tipperary. Paddy regularly proudly accepted development awards on behalf of Hillview, particularly appropriate as he was an avowed proponent of the development of Pitch and Putt.. Above all, Paddy liked nothing better than to participate in a wide-ranging exchange of views on all aspects of the P.P.U.I.’s infrastructure.

Paddy Power held many officerships through the years on Tipperary County Board. To all his postings, he brought a tremendous sense of pragmatism, a simple logic and an irresistible enthusiasm.

Paddy was an enthusiastic supporter of the PPUI's coaching programme and qualified as a Level One coach in 2000. Before and since, he introduced countless newcomers to the joys of Pitch and Putt through patient, straightforward and effective coaching techniques. When he could afford the time, Paddy was no slouch on the course himself. He particularly enjoyed team events.
.
A close confidant of the legendary founder of the PPUI, Ernest O'Brien-Hogan, it was fitting that Paddy Power succeeded his fellow Clonmel man, O'Brien-Hogan, as patron of the PPUI in 1995, a just reward for a lifetime's service to his chosen sport. Paddy's emotional speech in Youghal that day was probably his most eloquent of all his loquacious offerings at meetings over the years.

We will not see his like again. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a hanam uasal.

Our thanks to www.ppui.ie and John Manning who allowed us to use his glowing tribute to Paddy.

Cahill & Hoare Win Munster Titles

Shane Hoare (Larkspur Park) & Brian Cahill (Lakeside) won the Munster Intermediate & Junior Strokpeplay titles last Sunday in Bruff.

Reports to follow early next week.

McCarthy Wins Ladies Intermediate Munster Strokeplay

Michelle McCarthy of Hillview captured the Munster Ladies Intermediate Strokeplay Championship last Sunday in dramatic style when she defeated close friend Martha O'Brien of Lakeside in 6 hole play off at Fermoy. Both players have been battling it out since their days in the Juvenile Ranks since 2005 and once again it was McCarthy who had the edge on Sunday. In normal play she held her nerve to role in an excellent putt on the 36th hole to force the play off, a true sign of the calibre of player that she has become. McCarthy used all her experience and guile to edge out her tenacious opponent in the 6 hole play off by 2 shots. McCarthy now has really stamped her authority on the Intermediate Grade but one has to remark not to be surprise if you see both these players battling it out to win National Honours at Glenville later in the Year.

Congrats Michelle and hard luck to Martha.

Riverdale E Win National Scramble

They came like a series of waves last Saturday morning as the first
section of the 72 finalist teams converged on Ryston & St. Bridget’s,
These were not the players one would normally associate with a National
Final, rather they are the members who make up the backbone of a normal
Club and for them this was to be their Day in the Sun. Such is the beauty
of the National Scramble Competition in that it caters for the player of
higher handicap. Not for such players the weekly (or twice weekly) Scratch
Cup, no they may turn out for the four ball competition on a Sunday
morning if no pressing domestic or club activity waylays them.

At any rate the klaxon sounded at 9.30 and the eighteen teams started out
in both venues. For the first 40 minutes Mother Nature proved most unkind
with driving rain making playing conditions difficult. However the rain
stopped and eventually a patch of sun appeared and remained with us for
the next two days. The initial leaders were Woodlands D of Kildare but
when the next eighteen teams started out there was all to play for,
Deerpark A from Killarney produced an excellent 30 to go into the lead but
then the 36 hole scores started to come in and the lead swung again to
Woodlands D. With the courses bathed in sunshine playing conditions were
ideal for the second grouping and the scores after 36 reflected as much,
with Kilbeggan A proving to be the top team of the day with 62 1/3, The
next four scores were as follows Deerpark A 64, Woodlands D 64 2/3,
Majestic C 65 and Kilmichael B 65 1/3

Sunday dawned with the sun shining again and the scoring did not
disappoint, Woodlands B produced a staggering 27 2/3 in Ryston and
Riverdale from Tipperary entered into the fray to be joined by Kilbeggan,
Deerpark and Bruff. As a spectator I could only marvel at the overall
quality of the play especially as the majority of the players were in the
higher handicap bracket. The climax of the competition was less than an
hour away.

Just before 3 pm the final round commenced and once again the standard of
play was superb. The lead changed places on a number of occasions but
Riverdale’s experience showed in the end and they emerged victorious with
158 2/3 over the all Coffey team from Kilbeggan with 160 1/3 with Deerpark
A garnering third place with 161 by just 1/3 of a shot from Woodlands B.

As ever Ryston and St. Bridget’s proved to be excellent hosts and looked
after all visitors with their customary skill. Both courses were in
impeccable order and their condition surely was a contributing factor in
the outstanding scoring. But most important of all were the players
themselves who enjoyed their Day in the Sun so much. I for one wish we had
more competitions at Club level to cater for the vast majority who play
our game. If they perform as those I watched at the weekend it would give
a tremendous boost to Pitch & Putt

(Many thanks to the National PRO Padraig O'Shea for allowing us to use this report)

Maher Masters Riverdale Once Again

Pitch & Putt players often say that they have great records on different courses. Larry Maher Jnr of Erry is certainly one of this players. Riverdale has been very kind to him in recent years when he won the Riverdale Scr Cup in 2007 and yesterday he captured the very prestigious John Shoer Memorial in emphatic style.

72 players graced the indifferent conditions at Riverdale yesterday. Sean Minogue set the early pace when he returned a tremendous -13 but it didn't take long until this was overtaken but young starlet Stephen Shoer, when he blasted home a massive -16. This score was to remain in the lead for sometime until former Irish International Liam O'Donovan returned an excellent -16 to equal young Shoer. It looked as though they would battle it would between themselves until Larry Maher made a mockery of the course in shooting -19 to take a 3 shot lead hitting the final round.

Conditions in the final round were poor at first but turned out to be dry for when the leaders hit the first. Shoer birdied 2 & 4 to reduce the arrears to 1. Both birdied the small 8th hole and both birdied the 10th also. Maher held a great putt across the slope on 12 to increase the lead to 2. Shoer had opportunity to reduce the lead on 13 but his putt just slid by the hole. The big turning point came on 14, where Shoer missed a very bad putt for par and Maher saw his lead increase to 3 with only 4 to play. Both players birdied 15, both missed easy opportunities on 16. Both players once again birdied 17 and Shoer got a good putt on 18 but it was all in vain as he came up 2 shots short. Maher to his credit was very steady in the final round and took his chances when he got them. He is a great talent and is definately improving every year and is one that could capture a big title in 2009.

CAHILL CLINCHES SPRING LEAGUE FOR LAKESIDE

The Tipperary Spring League final was played between Lakeside & Riverdale at Larkspur Park last Sunday. Could Lakeside's players live up to the expectation of their followers or was it going to be another win for the Riverdale faithful?

Lakeside's Captain, Paddy Quinn won the toss and up stepped his Senior charges in Paul O'Brien & Noel Stapleton who were pitted against the supreme duo of Sean Minogue & John O'Meara. O'Brien stuck the 2nd to within a foot to set up a win and again almost aced the 4th to set up another birdie but in stepped O'Meara to sink a good putt to halve the hole. The match ebbed and flowed from here with Minogue and O'Brien holing birdies on 7th and again on 11th. Turning point came on 13 where Stapleton missed the green and O'Brien chipped poorly and they found themselves 1 down. Minogue pitched to within 3 feet on 14th to set up another win. The Lakeside duo were finding it difficult to wear down their opponents and eventually the Riverdale machines closed out the game to win 2&1. David Morrissey & Alan Maher of Lakeside were pitted against Stephen Shoer & Victor Long. The Riverdale duo had a nice element of youth and experience which is a good combination. The Lakeside pair never got into their stride and eventually lost the match 4&3. The Lakeside Intermediate partnership of Pat Kennedy & Ronan Loughnane were next up against Paul Shoer and Paul Shoer Jnr. Kennedy is the only player from Lakeside to Captain a winning Spring League Team and he wasn't going to let the side down. Both he and Loughnane were unrelentless in their game getting birdie after birdie but couldn't shake off the father and son combination. Lakeside were 1up when Kennedy hit the infamous 18th tee shot and happily found the front of the green. A closing par registered Lakeside's first point of the day.
Anthony Maher and Brian Cahill of Lakeside were next in line in the Junior Doubles against John Minogue and Simon Ryan of Nenagh. This partnership from Lakeside really got out of the blocks early when they were 5 under after 5 holes. The Riverdale duo never recovered from this star and the Lakeside boys closed out the match on the 16th to win 3&2. So after the doubles it remained 2-2. The singles were going to be interesting.
Paul O'Brien was pitted against Sean Minogue in the first game of the singles. O'Brien birdie 1,3,4,5,7, 8 & 9 to reach the turn 4 up. Minogue to his credit birdied 13,14 & 16 to reduce the arrears to 2 but a failed birdie attempt on the 17th indicated defeated for Minogue and O'Brien ensured that Lakeside had won a crucial singles point.
Noel Stapleton and John O'Meara had an unbelievable match. They were playing fantastic stuff in fairness, Stapleton very much the underdog in this match had the grit between his teeth was unrelentless, making putt after putt much to the disbelief of O'Meara. All the same O'Meara the heart of a lion and eventhough he found himself 1 down playing 17 and Stapleton only 2 feet from the pin, O'Meara held a great 7 footer to ensure the game went down the last. Stapleton found the front of the green, O'Meara just off the back but only about 8 feet. Stapleton missed, up stepped John and deservedly held the putt from the back of the green to halve the match. No player deserved to loose this one in fairness.
Next up was Stephen Shoer and David Morrissey. The later player got a very poor start in the inform Shoer really put him to the sword. He was 5 up through 8 but Morrissey to his credit tried to fight back but Shoer is a prodigious talent and he was in no mood to be caught. He closed out the match by 5&4 to push Riverdale back on level terms. Game on at 3.5 to 3.5 at this stage.
Alan Maher was against Victor Long in the first of the Intermediat singles and Alan lived up to his billing to close out the match by 2&1.
Paul Shoer Snr was senstational in his match against Patrick Kennedy to bring it back to level again.
Ronan Loughnane who has been rejuvenated this season was in excellent form when he disposed of Paul Shoer Jnr to put Lakeside back in front again.
Now it was left to the Junior Section as to where the league title would be destined for. John Minogue is ever improving and had a tough battle with Anthony Maher. Minogue though is a chip off the old block and he gained the intiative on the 14th to set up a win to tie up the match once again.
So the league came down to two players. Brian Cahill of Lakeside and Simon Ryan of Riverdale. Cahill the player of the league up to this point was ruthless and showed the experience of a veteran. He is definitely a player who as a fantastic future ahead of him and showed maturity beyond his years when it really mattered most. His pitch on 15 in which he was 3 feet put him 2 up with 3 go and in the driving seat. He then pitched big of 16 and left himself a delicate up and down. To his credit he place the ball to within inches of the hole and when Ryan bogeyed the hole, the title went to Lakeside for the only the second ever time in their history.

Riverdale's Captain Rory Hogan was extremely gracious in defeat. He emhpasised that the league was final was played in a great spirit and although his charges were defeated, he vowed that they would be back in 2010.

Lakeside's Captain Paddy Quinn on the otherhand found it difficult to hold back the emotion of the event. He thank most sincerely all the players of Lakeside who played at the league stages and he stated that they too played a huge role in this victory. He thanked the Co Board for running the league so efficiently during the league stages and also thanked Larkspur Park who as usual had their course in top class condition. Paddy also thanked Riverdale for a titanic game and wished their club all the best in 2009.

The Co Board would like to thank all the players from the 5 Clubs who supported the league for 2009. It proved to be a major success once again and the Co Board would like to congratulate Lakeside on their fine victory and commiserate with Riverdale but one suggests they will be back even sharper in 2010.

Riverdale V Lakeside

This Sunday 05/04/09 sees the final of the Tipperary Spring League in Larkspur Park at 09.30am. The ever impressive Riverdale team have once again qualified for the final but an emerging Lakeside team rallied over the final stages of the league to narrowly defeat Hillview by the narrowest of margins.

Riverdale Captain Rory Hogan will have his charges ready for action in order to retain their title. The stranglehold that Riverdale have on this Championship is simply breathtaking. Since the competitions inception back in the 90's Riverdale have only missed the final on a number of occassions. Going to print Riverdale have not released their team due to tactics but we will try and predict who will be on the team. Sean Minogue has been an ever present presence in the final for them and he will be eager to get another win. 2008 Tipperary Inter County stars John O'Meara and Stephen Shoer will be expected to make up the remaining senior team and Lakeside face a daunting prospect to overhaul these 3 tremendous players. The remaining Intermediate & Junior players from Riverdale is a little more difficult to predict who will be playing. Paul Shoer Snr will definitely be playing after his fantastic score at Larkspur Park in the league stage. Paul Shoer Jnr should be there or there abouts also. The evergreen Victor Long and his son Brian will be knocking on the door but will Rory open it is the question. We expect PJ Ryan who missed out last year due to other committments to return to the final stage. A steely competitor at the best of times, PJ will be anxious to get back in the winners enclosure. Simon Ryan has played well in the league also and could feature. No matter who Riverdale pick on their team they will start the final as Favourites, a tag that is justified.

The Lakeside Eight have been in Larkspur Park on no more than 4 occassions practicing. Captain Paddy Quinn has left no stone unturned to ensure that his charges have every angle covered so that his players can perform to the highest standard. Paul O'Brien, has won everything in Tipperary Pitch & Putt except a Spring League Title, so you can imagine he will be fired up to do well. Noel Stapleton and Davy Morrissey all have the experience needed to deal with the pressures this final will bring. Pat Kennedy the last Captain to lead Lakeside to the League Title is in the form of his life and anxious to do well. Ronan Loughnane is in and out this season but he has reasurred Paddy that is most definitely IN this Sunday. Alan Maher a former All Strokeplay Runner Up ensure Lakeside made the final with his score in Cashel. The ever steady Anthony Maher will lead the Junior charge but he is followed by undoubtedly the player of the league Brian Cahill. Lakeside have talent in abundance but really need to gel quickly as a team if they are pose a threat to their seasoned opponents.

Larkspur Park, probably the best course in the country at present should see a feast of Pitch & Putt this coming Sunday. Who will win though, is the big question on everybodies lips. Why not call over on Sunday morning to lend your support to what should be a cracker of a final.

Civic Reception for Hillview Masters

Last Friday 27th March at the Council Chambers, the Mayor of Clonmel Mr Martin O'Brien offered a civic reception to the achivements of David Hallinan, Margaret Slattery, Rory & Laura O'Hanrahan for their historic achievements in 2008. A huge turnout from both the Hillview Club and Tipperary Co Board ensured that our players got the support required for this unique occassion.

David Hallinan lived up to all the expectation when he captured the All Ireland Junior Strokeplay at Tullamore last July. The ever popular David showed how good he really was when he brought home the title to give Hillview their first Adult Individual National Title since 1961.

Next in line for honours were the dynamic duo of brother and sister Rory & Laura O'Hanrahan. At Castletown in Meath in late September of 2008, Rory & Laura showed maturity beyond their years to capture the All Ireland Mixed Foursomes for the second time in Hillview's history. Bringing home a total of 18up for 36 holes ensured that the Hillview duo would hold of the challenge of the 2007 winners Tracey & Joe McGrath of Erry. This is a tremendous honour for these two young prospects and they have very bright futures ahead of them.

Finally, Margaret Slattery who had the unenviable task of playing on home soil when she set out in trying to win the All Ireland O'55 Ladies Intermediate Strokeplay Title. Could Margaret live up to the pressures of her home course and what was expected of her? Of course she could but not without some drama. Margaret had to endure a 9 hole play off against Veronica Clarke of Killbeggan to snatch victory. Margaret now has the distinction of becoming the first Adult Lady to bring a National Individual title to Hillview.

All four players can be very proud of their achievements and can all look forward to 2009 with great enthusiasm.

Lakeside Duo Remain on NEC

The Co Board would like to congratulate Myles & Helen McMorrow who were both successful in their election to the National Executive Council of the Pitch & Putt Union of Ireland. Helen was elected unanimously as Hon Registrar and Myles was triumphant in this nomination for Vice President. Both people have been excellent administrators going back to the early 80's when they both joined the Tippeary Co Board. Myles then progressed to the now defunct Munster Council but Helen soon followed behind to serve in a number of positions of this board. Myles then joined the PPUI Executive in the late 90's where has remained an ever present member. When the Munster Council defunct in the early 00's Helen decided that she was once again to follow her man to the top of the PPUI Tree where she has remained as Hon Registrar ever since. The Co Board and their club Lakeside are very proud to have two people on the NEC and Tipperary Pitch & Putt is in a very healthy state with administrators of their calibre involved with the Board

Spring League - Round 4

They say home advantage is vital at the closing stages of any competition and Lakeside clearly outlined this advantage last weekend. Coming off a great result in Hillview the previous week, the Lakeside contingent knew that success on their home course would prove imperative for them to reach the Spring League Final for the first time since 2006. Lakeside have been growing in consistency over recent weeks and their players really stepped up to the mark last Sunday, skilfully lead by Paul O’Brien’s –19, Brian Cahill’s masterful –13 and the recharged Paul Tuohy who blasted home –6 in the Junior Grade. Their remaining players who were very consistent in their respective grades ensured they would claim victory on the day and they are now very much on the front foot leading in the last day of the league at Larkspur Park this coming Sunday. Riverdale who had a stumble in Hillview the previous Sunday are not mathematically through to the final, but only a cynic would suggest that they would not make the final. Hillview by coming 3rd at Lakeside ensured that this coming Sunday is really a shoot-out with Lakeside to see who will join Riverdale in the final. Both club’s players are now playing their best after indifferent starts to the League and Sunday’s final round is eagerly awaited. Paddy Quinn’s Lakeside Charges will be chomping at the bit to reach the final where as James Cleary’s Hillview Masters will be very anxious to reach the final in order seek revenge against Riverdale on last years defeat. We are in for a scintillating battle at Larkspur Park this coming Sunday. The Co Board would like to thank the Lakeside Club for the excellent condition in which they presented their course and also to the players who are continuing to support the league in such huge numbers, your support is very much appreciated.
Final round of the league will take place at Larkspur Park on Sunday 08/03/09 at Larkspur Park from 09.30am - 1.30pm.

Spring League Round 3

A fresh, warm and sunny Spring morning greeted the 71 players that took to the picturesque Hillview course in Clonmel last Sunday morning. The Hillview players knew that a win would push them ever closer to a league final spot for the second successive year and their players duly stepped up to the mark. Star of the future Stephen O’Reilly was in exceptional form when he posted a masterful –13 and give the Hillview contingent the start the required. The remaining Hillview players posted an aggregate of –37 to finish on –50 in total to ensure a much needed victory in the third round of the league. Now Hillview are in prime position, lying second in the table to Riverdale by only 2 points. However, Lakeside, whose players were led by the emerging Brian Cahill, really came out challenging Sunday to snatch the Runner-up spot and prove they are still very much a force. They now only lie 2 points behind Hillview in third position. Due to the fact that Lakeside have home advantage this coming Sunday one feels that they have a great chance to overtake Hillview but a lot will determine if their players can remain consistent and show the hunger that they possessed last Sunday. Riverdale who had an off day last Sunday, still remain in pole position and unless something dramatic was to happen it is hard to see them not making the final once again.
The 4th round of the league will take place at Lakeside on Sunday 01/03/09 from 09.30am – 1.30pm. With the league getting increasingly close, this round should prove extremely tense.
The Co Board would also like to wish Myles & Helen McMorrow the very best of luck in their pursuit of a place on the National Executive Committee within the Pitch & Putt Union of Ireland. Both people having given extraordinary service to Tipperary Pitch & Putt on an administrative side of the game and we wish both of them the very best.

Spring League Round 2

One has to think, in Tipperary Pitch & Putt at the moment is how are the other clubs going to stop the Riverdale Express Train? How can the other clubs do to stop them one wonders and I am not sure anyone has the answers. Yes, we understand that the Riverdale members really raise their games for the competition and this is the reason why they have dominated this competition since its inception back in the early 90’s. Belief in your own ability is a great trait for any sportsperson to have and I believe this is where Riverdale hold all the “Aces”. They are now practically certain of reaching the Spring League Final once again and credit has to go to the players who continue to fly the flag for the Nenagh club on a continuous basis. Their Club are like a family; they all play for one another and are forever encouraging one another. Their players are ecstatic and proud when their score counts each Sunday. Yes, ecstatic, why your may ask, counting each Sunday ensures a place on the team for the final and players from Riverdale will tell you that this is paramount, as they want to join the elite of players who have brought pride and glory to their Club as a result of the Spring League.
Never was it more evident that Riverdale aspire to retain their Spring League Title at Larkspur Park last Sunday. The Nenagh brigade were out in full force and reports spread to the course that they created traffic congestion in places like Ballycahill and Boherlahan as a result of the convoy that came from Nenagh. They packed the first Tee Box like linebackers on the American Football field to show that they were here inferior to no-one and clearly their authority on the league. John O’Meara just back from injury returned a fantastic 13 under par to set out his stall of making the final team after missing the opening round. PJ Ryan who missed last years final continued his consistent start to the year with a steady 5 under par in the Junior Section to ensure the Juniors would be of great benefit to the Clubs aggregate score. Now word had spread to their leading lights that they could smell victory and most probably advance to the final. Paul Shoer Snr returned a mind boggling 16 under par as an Intermediate and surely a record score from and Intermediate in the League since its humble beginnings. This score was to ensure that he won the 36 Nett (26 under) and certainly ensure that there was to be no catching the Riverdale faithful. Just to cap it off then, the talisman for Riverdale for three decades, the ever-popular left-hander, Sean Minogue. Sean powered home –16 gross to beat Paul Shoer on the back 18, a putt on the 17th from Sean saw him give his trademark fist pump as he victory was in sight for his beloved Riverdale.
What can one say about the Riverdale contingent but they are simply mile ahead in terms of preparation that any other team in the league. Saying that however, Lakeside and Hillview will be hoping to continue their improvement over the remaining 3 legs of the league and reach the final themselves. Larkspur Park / Tipp Hills need to win next Sunday one feels to challenge a fight back to reach the league final but anything is possible in Pitch & Putt.
Hillview will be the venue for the next round of the league on 22/02/09 and again your support is greatly appreciated. Times are from 09.30am – 1.30pm.

Paul O'Brien receives Annerville Award

Tipperary’s outstanding and varied sporting prowess, were highlighted at the Minella Hotel in Clonmel last Saturday night at the 50th Annerville Awards Ceremony. Over the past five decades Tipperary sportsmen and women in innumerable disciplines have made the proud walk to accept their awards. Paul O’Brien of Lakeside, Templemore now joins the elite of Pitch & Putt Players from around the county who have received this award. Paul proved to be a hugely influential member of the Irish side that won the World Cup for the first time ever and according to the official World Cup Website he was dubbed as the “Star of the Tournament”. O’Brien became the first Tipperary Man to play at the World Cup and he certainly didn’t disappoint when he won 6 matches from 6 to become only the second person in the tournaments history to achieve this feat. We congratulate Paul on winning this award and also thank the Tipperary United Sports Panel along with Bulmers who continue to honour the Pitch & Putt players of the county on the achievements that they bring to the game of Pitch & Putt.

Late Gus Cronin & Jack Gleeson

Two great stalwarts of Tipperary Hills Pitch & Putt sadly passed away last week in both Gus Cronin and Jack Gleeson. Both people were extremely proud of their Club and especially the players that they nutured throughout their time within the club. Gus was also a former Fine Gael councillor on the Tipperary Town Urban District council and served on the Committee of Tipp Hills. Jack although a native of Knocklong in Limerick was extremely proud to be associated with Tipperary Hills and in recent times he paid a visit to the All Ireland Inter County to catch up with some old friends and possibly even some adversaries of the past. I can safely say that I knew these two people personally and I am saddened that our game has lost two of the best characters ever to play in Tipperary. Whenever players would go to Tipp Hills they would see Gus making Tea in the Clubhouse and then later on Jack would be sitting beside him talking about the great Limerick Team of 1973. Yes you are right to think that both lads would never give an inch and that is what made them the characters that they were. I know that they were very much delighted to hear that the “Hills” was getting ready to open once again as the later days of their lives was spent on the course having the time of their lives. Both players are going to be very much missed around "The Hills". Ar Deis Dé go raibh a anam Dilis.

Spring League - Round 1

Last Sunday at Riverdale in Nenagh the Tipperary Pitch & Putt season for 2009 got underway in very cold but dry conditions. 61 players from all over the county battled through the conditions and I have to admit seeing so many players playing so early in the year is very encouraging for the remainder of the season.
Riverdale, who began the league stage as favourites certainly lived up to their billing when their aggregate team score pitted them in pole position at the end of the day. It has been said that the Captain of Riverdale Rory Hogan has had his clubmates out practicing since early January and this certainly paid off last Sunday. New kid on the block Stephen Shoer engineered a masterclass display when he returned an emphatic –17 to record the best gross score of the day and add to his growing reputation. Eventhough Riverdale were playing on their home course, one wonders of how they will be stopped from retaining the Spring League once again this year. Saying that though Lakeside could prove to be a formidable force this year in the league. Anthony Maher was their leading light in the Junior Section when he returned level par to take the 36 O/A Nett. Their Seniors were well below par but they were missing a few players also and if these return in time for the league stages, Lakeside could well find themselves in the shake up. Hillview who came third will be a little disappointed with that result but Riverdale has not a happy hunting ground for them in the past and Club Captain James Cleary will certainly be rallying the troops to perform better in Larkspur Park this coming Sunday. Larkspur Park / Tipp Hills will undoubtedly improve on Sunday’s performance as they have the benefit of having two home ties and this could proved extremely important in the closing stages of the league.
As stated already it was very exciting to see such numbers on the course and this is hoped to even increase as the league progresses. The Riverdale course for this time of year was in good condition especially after the rainfall leading into the competition. Next Sunday all roads lead to Larkspur Park and tee times will be from 09.30am – 1.30pm. Once again the Co Board would like to thank all the players who participated last Sunday.
Results from Last Sunday: Riverdale 6pts, Lakeside 4pts, Hillview 3 pts and Larkspur Park / Tipp Hills 2 pts.

Spring League 2009

The much-awaited Spring League kicks of the Pitch & Putt season at Riverdale, Nenagh this Sunday morning 01/02/09. Times of play will be from 9.30am to 1.30pm and entry will be €10. Riverdale who are the current holders will be hoping to continue their dominance in this competition and reports suggest that the Riverdale faithful are practicing since early December in order to retain this coveted title. Hillview, runners-up last year I am sure will be hoping to go one better this year but Riverdale in recent times has been an unhappy venue for the Clonmel contingent and they will be hoping to rectify this come Sunday. Lakeside, who have the players capable of performing to the highest level, but never seem to be consistent enough in the league will be very anxious to get back to the final. Larkspur Park, certainly have the potential to challenge for honours but could struggle this year with playing numbers with the re-emergence of Tipperary Hills taking back some of their players. Speaking about the aforementioned Tipperary Hills, I am extremely pleased to confirm that this great Club will once again compete in the Spring League. In recent times, this club along with old and new members have ensured that “The Hills” is back open for business and we so look forward to seeing some of the friendly faces once again on Sunday. Players from every club are urged to support this competition and more importantly support your Club in their quest to be crowned Spring League Champions for 2009.

15/02/09: Hillview
